MAYA AND PUPS PUPDATE:
Hi friends! After their vet visit I was going to do a video update like I normally do. It’s been a day, so here’s a write up instead.
Maya is looking much healthier today at her vet visit. She’s slowly putting weight on, but it’s not showing because she lost 5 to 6 pounds of weight from the largely inflamed and infected mammary glands she had when first rescued. She is currently 40.6 pounds. She was dewormed for tapeworms, as one presented yesterday in her stool. She is on Simparica Trio for prevention against parasites and heartworm. Moving forward, her care plan is to gain ten pounds before reassessing for surgery. She will go back to see the vet in three weeks for more scans, reassessment, and pre-surgical bloodwork if surgery happens immediately following. She will also be spayed during surgery. She can maintain regular physical activity with no restrictions.
Valentino weighed in at 5.18 pounds with a 2.18-pound weight increase. His swelling has subsided, but he has difficulty with his mobility. He presents as a puppy with Swimmers Puppy Syndrome. All four joints are affected. The likely cause is Maya’s insufficient intake of nutrients, with her malnutrition leading to her puppies not getting the nutrients they needed to grow correctly. Luckily, he is walking to a degree, but not a normal degree for his age. His care plan will include the sanctuary increasing intake of wet foods and continuing the physical therapy we have already started with him to build his strength. He will return to the vet in three weeks for reassessment, bloodwork, and scans.
Scarlet weighed in at 5.4 pounds with a 2.3-pound increase. Her swelling has gone down and her health is much better. She seems to be on the correct path of healing. Her care plan moving forward is to increase intake of wet foods. She will attend the checkup in three weeks to get a routine check-up.
The three-week follow-up is scheduled for 3/6/24
